FOD-Free, Automated Assembly Lines: A KATO Guide

Kato-Bro-Thumbnail

In manufacturing, FOD-free means designing processes so that debris is never created, rather than relying on inspection to find and remove it afterwards.

Foreign Object Debris is any material that does not belong in an assembly: swarf, fragments of fasteners, packaging, tools or particles. Traditional FOD control is reactive, built on counting, sweeping and inspecting. In automated production that approach does not scale,  because every manual check interrupts the cycle. The safest debris is the debris that is never generated.

Our latest guide explores why FOD-free is vital beyond just aerospace, how threaded joints can be designed for repeatable robotic assembly, the crucial role of tangless inserts and everything engineers need to know
