# Reducing maintenance downtime with tang-free, automation-ready inserts

Posted by Advanex  |   17 September, 2026

Maintenance downtime can be reduced by designing threaded assemblies that are quicker to service, less vulnerable to thread damage and easier to restore to a consistent condition. For high-volume manufacturers, this means considering maintenance at the design stage: durable threaded interfaces, fewer installation steps and fastening processes that can be repeated predictably can all help equipment return to service faster.

The cost of a fastening decision therefore extends beyond the production line. A joint that takes seconds to assemble may remain in service for years, during which it could be inspected, disassembled, repaired and reassembled multiple times. Designing for those interventions can make maintenance considerably simpler.

## Think beyond installation - what happens the second, fifth or tenth time?

A maintainable threaded joint should continue to provide a reliable fastening interface after repeated assembly and disassembly.

This is particularly important when threads are formed directly into softer materials such as aluminium or magnesium. Repeated removal and installation of a fastener can contribute to thread wear or damage, introducing variation into subsequent fastening operations.

Wire thread inserts provide a separate threaded interface between the fastener and parent material. [Inserts distribute stress more evenly across the fastening and can protect softer parent materials from mechanical wear](https://blog.katoadvanex.com/a-guide-to-wire-thread-inserts).

That changes the maintenance question from “*Will this joint survive initial assembly*?” to “*How easily can this joint be returned to a reliable condition throughout its service life?*”

## The downtime chain - why can one extra fastening step matter?

Every additional maintenance operation creates another requirement for tooling, inspection, handling or operator intervention.

Consider a conventional tanged wire thread insert. Following installation, its tang must be broken off and retrieved. Where FOD control is important, confirming that the separated tang has been removed can add another consideration to the process. A simplified process removes links from that chain:

- Number of operations: Fewer stages can shorten the overall process
- Tooling requirements: Simpler procedures can reduce intervention
- Thread condition: Durable threads support repeated servicing
- Debris management: Fewer loose elements simplify FOD control
- Reinstallation consistency: Predictable interfaces support repeatable fastening

This becomes particularly relevant when maintenance processes are standardised or automated. A process with fewer variables is generally easier to reproduce consistently than one containing additional break-off, retrieval or inspection operations.

## What makes a threaded insert automation-ready?

An automation-ready insert should support a simple, predictable installation process with as few secondary operations as possible. [Robotic systems depend on repeatability](https://blog.katoadvanex.com/establishing-aerospace-grade-precision-in-high-volume-automated-assembly-lines). Inconsistent threads, tooling variation and additional manual operations can all undermine otherwise highly controlled automated processes.

The same principle applies to maintenance. Manufacturers increasingly designing around robotics and automated assembly should consider whether their fastening method can also support repeatable servicing, repair and replacement. This creates a useful design principle of design for automated assembly, but also design for efficient recovery when something needs attention.

## Can tang-free inserts help reduce maintenance downtime?

Tang-free inserts can simplify maintenance by eliminating the tang break-off and retrieval stage while providing a removable, replaceable threaded interface.

KATO Advanex Tangless® wire thread inserts use a bi-directional notch design rather than an installation tang. With dedicated tooling, they can be installed and removed without generating the tang-related FOD associated with conventional tanged inserts.

For high-volume and automated manufacturers, the advantage is not simply installation speed. Removing an operation makes the overall fastening process simpler and reduces the number of variables that need to be managed during both production and subsequent maintenance.

## Designing downtime out with KATO Advanex

Reducing maintenance downtime starts before maintenance is required. Engineers that consider thread durability, serviceability and process complexity during component design can create assemblies that are easier to maintain and return to production.

KATO Advanex Tangless® wire thread inserts combine a durable threaded interface with tang-free installation and straightforward removal using dedicated tooling. By eliminating tang break-off and retrieval, they can support simpler, FOD-free and automation-ready fastening processes while protecting the parent thread through repeated servicing.

For manufacturers focused on increasing uptime, the smallest components can make a meaningful difference: a fastening process designed with fewer steps today can mean fewer complications when maintenance is required tomorrow. Download our guide below to find out more.
